The FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 was the first World Cup hosted in the Middle East and one of the most infrastructure-intensive tournaments ever staged. Matches ran across a compact host footprint, with stadiums, broadcast compounds, hospitality villages, and fan zones all needing continuous, resilient power and climate control in Gulf conditions.

Under parent company GL events, FLOW was appointed as the Official Sites Temporary Power and HVAC supplier for the tournament. The scope covered critical temporary electrical and cooling systems for official sites, coordinated with permanent venue infrastructure so that match operations, media, and hospitality could run without interruption from opening day through the final.

For producers and technical directors planning large multi-venue events in the Gulf, Qatar 2022 remains a reference case for temporary power density, distribution complexity, and on-site engineering capacity at continental scale.

What FLOW delivered

  • Power: More than 1,000 silenced generators deployed across official sites, with temporary distribution designed for stadiums, broadcast, and overlay loads.
  • Distribution: Approximately 4,000 distribution boards and over 1,000,000 metres of electrical cable installed, commissioned, and maintained for the tournament window.
  • Cooling: Temporary HVAC systems supporting official site environments where permanent plant alone could not cover overlay demand.
  • Design & project delivery: End-to-end project management, installation, commissioning, and live maintenance by a team of more than 400 staff drawn from operations worldwide.

Why it mattered

World Cup venues combine broadcast-critical loads, spectator comfort, and security systems that cannot tolerate unplanned downtime. Temporary power had to integrate cleanly with permanent stadium plant, support peak concurrent demand on match days, and remain maintainable across five stadium sites in Doha and Lusail.

Qatar’s climate adds another constraint: cooling loads for hospitality, media, and back-of-house spaces are not optional. FLOW’s dual power-and-HVAC appointment under GL events allowed generation, distribution, and temporary cooling to be engineered as one temporary plant package rather than as disconnected rental lists.

Logistics and workforce scale were as important as kit. Moving, installing, and staffing more than a thousand generators and thousands of boards required multi-national crews, staged mobilisation, and live-event maintenance protocols that kept systems available for every fixture.
