Temporary Power for the Dakar Rally in Saudi Arabia
The Dakar Rally is one of the world’s most demanding motorsport events. Its first edition in Saudi Arabia in 2019 introduced multi-stage desert logistics across the Kingdom, with bivouacs, ceremony sites, and stage infrastructure standing up and striking down as the rally moved.
FLOW was awarded the contract to supply temporary power for the starts and finishes at every stage, supported by large temporary infrastructure. FLOW also designed and installed temporary power for the opening ceremony, delivering a unique spectacle to launch the Dakar within Saudi Arabia.
Remote-stage power is a different discipline from urban festivals: access, fuel, weather, and rapid redeployment matter as much as generator count.
What FLOW delivered
- Power: Temporary power for stage starts and finishes across the rally itinerary, backed by large temporary infrastructure packages.
- Opening ceremony: Design and installation of temporary power for the launch ceremony introducing Dakar to Saudi audiences.
- Remote logistics: Delivery suited to desert and multi-site motorsport conditions rather than fixed urban venues.
Why it mattered
Stage starts and finishes are short, high-visibility windows with media, timing, medical, and operational loads that must work on time in locations without permanent event power. Temporary systems have to be reliable, relocatable, and simple to maintain under dust, heat, and long travel days.
Opening ceremonies add show production demands (lighting, audio, effects) on top of operational power, often on temporary sites chosen for landscape rather than grid access. Integrating ceremony spectacle with rally operations requires careful design of temporary plant and distribution.
For Saudi motorsport and outdoor adventure events, Dakar set a template for temporary power across dispersed sites: plan for mobility, harsh environment, and uncompromising show and safety timelines.
